No, these are not the Shad you are thinking of. These fish are not bait fish. The American Shad is the largest member of the Herring family as well as our Country’s founding fish. They weight between 1 and 6 pounds on the Umpqua River and flat out pull hard! The Umpqua receives several hundred thousand of these hard fighting mini Tarpon yearly between Mothers Day and Fathers Day. We use light spinning gear or fly fish for them until your tired. They make a great combo trip together with Smallmouth Bass. This makes for an action packed catching day!
