Stormy Weather on the Umpqua

 Stormy Weather on the Umpqua

Well the next big storm I was talking about in the last report is here and looks like the Umpqua will be shut down for a week or 2. It has been a very good year thus far for Steelhead and should continue when the river recedes back to fishable levels. Here are some photos of this week which was very productive most days despite the cold and snow!

We will be at the International Sportsmen’s Show at the Cal/Expo Fairgrounds in Sacramento,Ca this week 1/17–1/22 if your in the area stop by our booth #2228

Dropping River Levels

Guide+with+steelhead Dropping River Levels The Umpqua is dropping into shape nicely after the Christmas rains. We had fantastic high-water fishing on anchor the last week and a half, most days getting 10+ now that the river has receded it’s back to side drifting and fish are scattered throughout the system. Should be good until the next storm.
For those of you who are concerned about our use of Boga Grips on Steelhead feel free to contact me (todd at bigkoutfitters.com) and I will be happy to educate you on this quick, net less technique. Hope you enjoy this weeks photos.

Umpqua River Steelhead Report

 Umpqua River Steelhead Report
Winter Steelhead season is in full swing as we have hooked over 60 Steelhead this week despite the low, cold water conditions. Nothing like a few mint bright Umpqua River Steelhead to brighten up your winter! You have until the end of February to get some shine yourself.  Were so confident you will catch a Steelhead that if you don’t, you don’t pay!

Merry Christmas!

Umpqua River Steelhead

The Umpqua River Steelhead have arrived right on schedule. The water has been a bit high and off color the last few days, however the rest of this week looks good. We will be focusing on Winter Steelhead Through Feb. If you are interested in fishing the increasingly popular Pre-Spawn Smallmouth season Mid- March through Mid-May you better get a date booked soon! Will have more Steelhead photos end of week.

Gearing up for Winter Steelhead

Gearing up for Winter SteelheadThe Fall Salmon season is winding down…

We’re still catching Chinook & Silver Salmon, Trout, Smallmouth Bass (like this 22″ beast) and an occasional Summer Steelhead. Some days all of the above, however we are not getting a lot of any one species.

Next week will be our last for the Fall season so hoping to finish strong on the Umpqua…we will let you know.

First Winter Steelhead trip is Nov.26 and will fish them through Feb. Still lots of open dates so jump on them quick.

Tidewater Salmon Still Going Strong

 Tidewater Salmon Still Going Strong
Fishing on the Loop around The Big K Ranch has been great this Fall. We are averaging 40 Smallies a day per angler and the Topwater bite in the afternoons has been sweet!

The Silver Salmon, Chinook, Jacks, Sea-Run Cutthroat and Steelhead (half pounders) have been good and most days we have been catching all of the above!

Tidewater Salmon is still going strong as we have landed 39 Salmon in my boat alone the last 3 days.

According to O.D.F.W. we have supposedly and mysteriously met our wild Coho retention quota for this year, so no more keeping wild Coho this season… and all the seals rejoice, the gravy train is back!

Hope you enjoy the Photos.

Silvers and Chinook

Silvers and ChinookFall Chinook fishing has been good, however it is starting to slow a bit, but the Silvers are starting to fill the bay so there will be lots of action most days. Remember we can keep wild Silvers as of 9/15 and October is a great time to cast for Salmon!

Chinook Limits Before Noon

Chinook Limits Before NoonSmallmouth Bass fishing on the Umpqua River Loop is still good and will be as long as the warm weather continues. Chinook Salmon fishing in tidewater has been as good as it gets: we have limited before noon most days but don’t expect that to continue. The Silvers however will be arriving in big numbers soon, so who knows what will happen? Check out our article “Casting For Tidewater Coho” by Scott Haugen in the September issue of Salmon,Trout,Steelheader.

We still have a few open dates in October so give us a call!

125 Smallmouth Bass per Day!

 125 Smallmouth Bass per Day!

Smallmouth Bass fishing at the Big K is UNBELIEVABLE right now. Most people are getting around 125 bass a day with lots of twos and threes, a few in the fours and an occasional five plus pounder. The weather has been in the mid eighties, wildlife is thick, very few boats and light winds in the afternoon…. It truly does not get better than this! Should have Salmon in next fishing report.
